THE STORY OF JBUM

JBUM is the nom-de-spume of Jim Bumgardner, a technical/creative consultant
living and working in Burbank California. Jim grew up on the east coast, and
then studied music composition at CalArts in the early 80s.

These days, he gets his kicks from doing cool things that have both a strong
technical and creative bent.

Jim is probably most famous for creating "The Palace" - a popular Internet Avatar chat world which took the Internet by storm in 1995. Jim designed & built the Palace in 1994 on his trusty Macintosh with help from the artists Damon and Doyle (the infamous Williams bros). In 1995, Both Jim and Mark Jeffrey further developed this software into a complete product which includes the software (which Jim wrote), a take-no-prisoners "GORILLA" marketing campaign, an amazingly cool website, and the user-created phenomenon known as PalaceSpace.

On the Palace, Jim became known as "jbum" - which is his logon name and "handle", and the name has stuck. He now responds to both names, although it helps if you hold up a snack. Eventually, a company, The Palace Inc, formed around this amazing product, and jbum and Mark became co-founders, along with CEO Mike Maerz and a host of incredibly talented people from Intel and Time Warner Interactive. Alas, jbum's quick and creative mind grew restless after a few years with The Palace, so jbum flew the coop to start an independent consulting business. Now jbum persues a wide variety of highly demanding work that involves both technical and creative challenges. jbum likes to do quick and creative hacks, and interesting jobs that involve obscure and arcane areas of knowledge. If you need someone who uses both sides of the brain with great ferocity, then you may be in need of a jbum. jbum has a long history of creating amazing, creative internet and multimedia technolgies and content. Among other things, he's made award winning CD-ROMs, a time capsule that was sent to Mars, and a large collection of free software toys which he distributes from his website. Thru his natural curiosity he has amassed a great deal of knowledge about many different things, including computer graphics, music, audio, internet stuff and other things too numerous to mention here. If you're not sure if jbum knows about something, you can always ask him, because jbum is a straight shooter and will gladly tell you when he doesn't have a clue about something, such as "flux converters" for example. jbum also loves to teach and give seminars, and is a very entertaining writer AND speaker who likes to pepper his presentations with amusing metaphors, visual aids and humor. jbum is very friendly and people are known to grow very fond of him, with time.
