An Acrostic Puzzle for the Millenium

I wrote a Java program a few months ago to help construct this puzzle. I chose the quotation and author, but let the computer determine the clue words A thru Y. A side effect of the algorithm I used accounts for the uniformity of the word lengths (most of these clue words are 7 or 8 letters long). I let the computer generate a handful of different word collections, and I chose the one I liked the best. Then I wrote the clues.

Instructions

Use the clues to fill out the words A thru Y. Transfer each letter to its corresponding numbered square in the grid. Black squares indicate word boundaries. When complete, the grid will contain a quotation. The first letter of each clue word will spell out the author's name and location.
